<description>Brief: Explore typography occurring in a local environment.

Concept: On close inspection, we seem to live amongst typography. I wanted to capture and record a full alphabet found within 500 metres of my home. Luckily for me I live right next door to a massive hospital where there was plenty of material to explore.

Inspiration: My use of photography is often to add a human touch to typography. Type on a screen or in a book can have a mechanic and processed feel. Therefore, I wanted to capture a living breathing typeface with which I could have a personal relationship. Stefan Sagemesiter uses photography of type in beautiful and exceptional way and this inspired my first steps in that direction.

Method: However unusual, I chose to photograph anything and everything that resembled a letter intending to collate them into an alphabet. This endeavour led me through bins, alleyways and ultimately resulted in my removal from the hospital premises.

<description>Brief: Create a typeface inspired by music. Communicate the essence and inspiration of the chosen design on A3 presentation boards. Characters to include: A-Z / 0-9.

Concept: The concept for this typeface is solidity. I wanted its design to be strong and robust. I decided to focus my typeface on simple high contrast shapes.

Inspiration: Initially based on music speakers, my sketches began to resemble a sprite from Space Invaders, the 1980s video game. By incorporating this idea, I hoped to create a sense of nostalgia and heritage within each character. Even though it's inspired by the 80's, the design is relevant today as modern popular culture continues to draw reference from that era.

Method: I set myself rules and limitations to ensure that the typeface had a desired aesthetic. All the characters started as perfect squares, then pieces were carved out to form the letter. All the lines in the typeface are perfectly straight to add to the retro feel. Indentations to the characters are minimal to keep as much of the square intact to preserve the brick like solidity of the type when viewed as a whole.

<description>Brief: Create and build a new front-end and CMS for Otter Recordings, a London based Record Label.

Concept: The keyword behind this whole project was "Random". Nothing should be expected, obvious or cliché.

Inspiration: With a open brief of randomness, I took inspiration from a wide range of places, typographically - from 1940's boxing and circus flyers and photography - from cult magazines such as Vice.

Method: Firstly the randomness should be conveyed via the typography, Knockout, by the wonderful Hoefler &#38; Frere-Jones has a huge variety of weights, interestingly enough, they are also named after boxing weight classes - such as super heavyweight and ultra featherweight. A select variety of the weights were used to mix the type up and make it feel quite random whilst delivering standout to the keywords in the type. A suite of random background images were also selected.

		<guid isPermaLink="false">205520</guid>
<description>Brief: Design a 10-15 second motion graphic identity.

Concept: The overriding theme of my portfolio is 'growth'. Growth in my abilities and growth in my experience. I think that a simple idea can grow into a wonderfully expressive answer to a brief. For this project, I have tried to illustrate the process of growth.

Inspiration: This was to be the last assignment for my diploma, I felt that it was inspired by many of the other projects completed along the way, the typeface and the colours have a clear history. I chose to use type, colour and shape to define my designs, these have been the building blocks of my projects.

Method: Ideas are never fully formed when they pop into your mind, and to this end I wanted the graphics to begin blank on a completely black background. As ideas begin to develop, we get a visual idea of where they are going before a moment of clarity. To illustrate this, the graphics are initially shown as mosaics that quickly morph to crystal clear images. Ideas then converge towards each other and finally they fuse together as a cohesive design.
