Grow Your Own Type
Brief: Communicate a message without over-relying on technology.

Concept: Concentrating on the central theme of nature, I produced a series of photographs that delivered a simple message. I wanted to create a design I couldn't tweak and manipulate using technology, the point was to let mother nature do all the work.

Inspiration: To me, Stefan Sagmeister's use of typography is ingenious. He uses his own handwriting as well as organic everyday matter to create type, doing so to add a human touch to his designs. I wanted to work in that same vein, creating a design that would evolve over a period of time and was not entirely within my control.

Method: I wanted to allow a certain amount of structure to my characters and thought it would be quite a contradiction to have nature following the lines and shapes of a humanist typeface, in this case Gill Sans. I took hundreds of photos to create a diary of the progression of the message.
